My print project on 'journeys' has been mainly influenced by Indian Rock art and it is important that I also include fine art contextual references.
Although I have already looked at fine artists who use print in their works, such as Shaun Demarest, Gary Hume, Marc Quinn and Rembrandt, I wanted to research artists who don't necessarily use print as their way of working but look at the same themes and ideas that I have included in my project.
My initial ideas involved the physical act of getting places, how we get there, such as on hands and feet, and furthermore the progression of man and evolution. Although my project has developed in different ways that have strayed from the initial ideas, there is still an element of evolutionary subject matter within my work. I have found interest in the progression of art produced by man rather than the progression of man itself. My intentions for the work I have produced was to recapture the ways in which people worked at the time of Anasazi Rock Art, as well as developing my ideas through modern means of print such as screen-printing and mono-printing.
Zadok Ben-David is one artist I have looked at that incorporates ideas of evolution into his works.
'Evolution and Theory' 1999 painted stainless steel
This artist uses the images of evolution from ape to man to accentuate the importance of man as a part of nature but also to address man's addiction to the modern lifestyle. Zadok Ben-David encompasses the idea of all the unanswerable questions that we face in life such as the creation of the world, illustrating how the search for the answers keeps us aware of the earth around us. I think this to be a really interesting concept, as man fulfill the same routines everyday, rushing around oblivious to the wonder of everything around us and why its here.
Gaugin is another artist who encompasses these ideas through his piece 'Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?'
I am greatly interested in philosophical subjects such as these. I often have moments where I sit and think about the meaning of everything, freewill versus determinism, how everything falls into place and how one little decision can have a huge domino effect. I think subject matter such as this is so complex and thought provoking that a great deal of time is needed to do it justice and create works which the viewer also finds thought provoking and inspirational. Whilst my print project has taken another path, this subject matter is definitely something to consider for further development at a later point when I am able to encompass it and nurture it effectively.
